TVL was a force of nature. Bigger, faster, and stronger. He was the one guy you always wanted on your baseball team. Standing front and center in the panoramic 8th-grade class photo, sport coat, bow tie, and all.

His knee injury ruined the dream to play professional baseball (or even becoming a truck driver), but his grit and athleticism kept him playing at the varsity level. Who else could have done that with half a kneecap? And become a professional fireman?

One Halloween before high school his church over on South Second Avenue was having a dance. So, he decided to dress up for it. He created a hobo costume, and his mom added makeup. When he got to the dance, he was met at the door by the older brother of one of our classmates. Wearing a suit. It looked like everyone was in suits and dresses, a formal dance. TVL took off running and ran all the way home.

He knew how to have fun.
